There are some commissions that feel different the moment they land.
When the team at Adnams Properties asked me to voice the telephone welcome system across their hotels and restaurants, I knew straight away this wasn't a typical voiceover job. This was about being the first human contact or the closest thing to it - for anyone calling The Crown in Southwold, The Swan, or any of their other much-loved properties.
The brief was clear and purposeful. Adnams wanted brand consistency across their portfolio. A single voice that could guide callers confidently - helping them navigate to the right department, understand quickly which venues take reservations and which welcome walk-ins, and hear about their gift card options without it feeling like an interruption. Word economy was everything. Warmth was non-negotiable.
That's a different kind of discipline from a commercial voiceover or a documentary narration. On a phone system, you have seconds. The caller might be standing outside on a blustery Southwold afternoon, trying to book a table at the restaurant before their parking runs out. They need clarity, they need to feel welcomed, and they need to know they've reached the right place - fast.
Preparation meant working carefully with the script and with Adnams' in-house technical requirements, because the voice has to integrate cleanly with the system architecture. Every line has to sit correctly in the flow - not just sound right in isolation, but land right in context, at the moment a real person needs it.
And then there's the weight of the brand itself.
Adnams has been part of Suffolk since 1872. For many of us who grew up here, it's woven into memory - a first visit to Southwold, a meal at The Swan, a bottle of Broadside at Christmas. It's a family business that countless local families have their own quiet connection to. Being asked to voice that welcome - to be, in a small but real way, the sound of that brand - is something I didn't take lightly.
I'm proud of how it came together. Sometimes the most disciplined voiceover work is the kind nobody consciously notices. They just feel, immediately, that they're in the right hands.
That's the job.
